This is what the eagles are after -- the salmon who've died after spawning. We could see them in the river bottom all along the way. Steve took this one and flung it up on the shore to attract the eagles. Sure enough, within 20 minutes, several young were flying overhead, and although none of them swooped down while we watched, they had definitely spied the carcass. I learned from the interpretive center that the young have different wings made for soaring, while the adults have wings that give them an attack advantage. The youngins are comparatively ugly, too, with spotted-colored bodies void of any outstanding features.
