We didn't do much for the 4th. There was a cookout up top, which I sat out b/c I was asleep. I did make it out to the supposed 'fireworks' later that evening. I sorta got worked up about them, b/c that's one of my favorite parts of the 4th of July. It wasn't 'til later that I found out they were going to be firing off expired flares. Not exactly a Disney extravaganza, but I guess it had to do. I went up and they let us shoot some off if we wanted. I hope I never have to release one to save a life - mine went out more horizontal than vertical. I don't think too many people would see them that way.
This quote by Erma Bombeck sums up how I feel about the 4th:
You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.
